Puppy Care & Kitten Care in Locust Grove, VA
Why Are Wellness Exams Important?
Early Detection of Health Issues
Wellness exams allow us to monitor your pet’s growth and development, as well as identify any potential health issues. This is especially important for puppies and kittens, as they are more susceptible to certain health conditions, such as parasites, infections, and congenital defects.
By catching these issues early on, we can provide the necessary treatment and prevent them from developing into more serious problems. This can ultimately save your pet’s life and improve their quality of life.

What to Expect During a Puppy/Kitten Wellness Exam
Wellness exams typically occur every 3-4 weeks until your puppy/kitten is 16 weeks old. After that, they should occur every 6-12 months, depending on our recommendations.
During a wellness exam, we will perform a thorough physical examination. This includes checking their eyes, ears, nose, mouth, teeth, skin, coat, and overall body condition. We will also listen to your pet’s heart and lungs and check for any abnormalities.
We will also ask you questions about your pet’s behavior, diet, and any changes you may have noticed since the last exam. This is an excellent opportunity for you to ask any questions or voice any concerns you may have about your pet’s health.

Parasite Testing and Prevention
Testing for Parasites
The first step in preventing parasites in your puppies and kittens is to have them tested for any existing parasites. We will perform a fecal exam to check for the presence of worms and other internal parasites. We may also perform a skin scraping to check for external parasites such as fleas and mites.
It is recommended to have your puppies and kittens tested for parasites at least once a year, or more frequently if they spend a lot of time outdoors or show symptoms of a parasite infestation.
